It\u2019s the perfect destination if you want nature without the extreme heat of the lowlands.<\/p><p>The <strong>Blue Lagoon (Laguna Azul)<\/strong> in Sauce, about two hours from Tarapoto, is the region\u2019s crown jewel \u2014 a vast turquoise lake surrounded by jungle. You can swim, kayak, or take a boat ride across its calm waters. The temperature is pleasant, and there are cozy cabins all around.<\/p><p>The waterfalls are Tarapoto\u2019s greatest treasures. The <strong>Ahuashiyacu Waterfall<\/strong>, close to the city, drops 40 meters into a crystal-clear pool where you can swim. There are also more remote cascades, perfect for travelers seeking quiet immersion in nature.<\/p><p>Local cuisine is rich and hearty: <em>tacacho con cecina<\/em> (mashed plantain with dried pork), <em>juanes<\/em> (rice and chicken wrapped in bijao leaves), and <em>inchicapi<\/em> (peanut chicken soup). Tarapoto is also an excellent base for day trips \u2014 more urban and comfortable than deep jungle lodges.<\/p><p><strong>Practical tip:<\/strong> Tarapoto is laid-back and safe. You don\u2019t need the full jungle protection kit, but bring repellent anyway. Pack light clothes, swimwear, and comfortable sandals.
